Discernment

Vocational discernment is the process of discovering through prayer, reflection, and experience the vocation to which God has called you.  It is a special time to probe the possibilities of where He may be leading.  It helps to pay close attention to the feelings that are evoked when your reflect on different possible vocations.  Inner peace and joy is a sign that the Spirit of the Lord is at work. On the other hand, unsettling feelings such as discouragement, anxiety, and fear, may be signs that God is leading you elsewhere.  We learn to hear God’s voice by following these gentle movements of the heart.  Of course the reasoning of the mind can assist us in discovering God’s plan for us, but ultimately it is to the heart that He speaks.
